Introduction to the Porcelli propellers

In flight Variable Pitch Propeller Why? In flight Variable Pitch Propeller

The Porcelli in flight variable pitch propeller, allows you to automatically exploit the full power of your engine. By installing an inflight Variable Pitch Propeller is like having a number of different propellers, each one of them best suited to a particular flight phase such as takeoff, climb, cruise, descend, dive or land.

A propeller for take-off

Installing an Inflight Variable Pitch Propeller you will get the maximum possible thrust from your engine, hence, your take-off run will be the shortest possible ever.

A propeller for climbing

Again your Inflight Variable Pitch Propeller will give you the best possible climbing rate.

A propeller for Cruising

Your Inflight Variable Pitch Propeller will increase the efficiency of your engine-propeller assembly. So you get the same mileage with less fuel and at a faster speed.

A propeller for speeding

Your Inflight Variable Pitch Propeller will optimize your top speed pushing your aircraft to the maximum speed achievable with your engine power.

Propellers

The efficiency of a propeller is defined as the ratio between the used power (speed x traction) and the power supplied by the engine.

The efficiency obtained with a good propeller is at most 85%, that is, with an engine of 100 Hp you get 85 Hp of used power whereas 15 Hp are wasted, but this is only true when travelling at V0 (optimum speed). Travelling at any different speed you will get a lower efficiency. This is because the propeller blades provide their maximum thrust when positioned to an angle of incidence between 2 and 3 degrees; in a fixed pitch propeller this condition occurs only at Vo.
A propeller that can change its pitch angle as the plane flies achieves the maximum efficiency at any flight condition. In fact it keeps its angle of incidence constantly at about 2 ° -3 °. This way, Vo is no longer one single speed, but a range of speeds, as shown by the red curve. We can say that a variable pitch propeller on an aircraft has a similar function of a car gear box.

Company

Elvio Porcelli

The Porcelli propellers stems from the desire of Elvio Porcelli. Son of art, working in the field of precision mechanics for over 60 years!

In 2014 Elvio decided to turn his passion into work, founding the Porcelli Propellers Ltd. The company has the know-how of more than a decade in the field of aircraft propellers. The use of CAD CAM software and CNC machines of the latest generation have allowed further developments in production, and it is now at its peak with the development of the reverse pitch propeller for use with amphibian aircrafts. The use of metals such as titanium, aircraft aluminum and special steel made it possible to develop a propeller with mechanical properties far superior to the required standard, maintaining content and maximizing the safety factor. In fact all the propellers produced have a double safety system (electrical and mechanical) to prevent any possible failures. Our goal, as a company, is to create a product that is leader in this field.
With the long experience and with the positive feedback of our clients, we feel encouraged to work and maintain our small company as an example of the hard work and the ingenuity typical of the Italian people. Our emphasis is on the inventiveness to create products that better respond to the needs of both the private pilot and the aeronautical industry.

Elvio Porcelli

has been infected with the passion of flying from his early age in 1979, he produced an aircraft designed by the engineer Marino Touts based on Rogallo’s wing, called "Leonardino." With his Leonardino Elvio became one of the pioneers of light aviation in New York, opening the way to future ultra-light as we know them today.
In 1980 he obtained a PPL license in Rome. Between 1985 and 1994 Elvio flew an aircraft he designed and built in his own workshop, the result of experiments or further training.
In 1995 he built, with his friend Franco Tombolillo, an aircraft derived from the famous Storm, and it was in that period that he began to think of adjustable pitch propellers. The market did not offer much about such propellers for ULM. So, why not build one? The first prototype of a variable pitch propeller, a two-blade electrically operated one was first developed.
The novelty aroused curiosity and enthusiasm among friends and colleagues, and so the propeller was given to some of the most experienced pilots including Franco Martone, Carlos Grisogoni , Angelo Pastore. The military pilots of good experience had the precise task to stress the propeller in order to bring out any eventual issues. After more than five years of tests all the pilots gave their blessing to the new propeller.
During all these many years, Elvio has been improving his propellers thus arriving to the product as we see it today. His ultimate product being the hydraulic version, an absolute novelty in the field ultralight.
